Anchored Ascent — Trauma Neuroscience & Embodied Healing

    Anchored in your body.
    Rising into yourself.

A neurophysiologically-informed program for trauma healing and embodied transformation. Built on the work of Ruth Lanius, Frank Corrigan, DBR, nonviolent SAFE PTI EMDR, SSP, RRP, and Polyvagal principles — for clients, clinicians, and intensive seekers.

    The Science

    Trauma is not a story.
    It lives in the body.

This newsletter is built on the conviction that healing happens at the intersection of rigorous neuroscience and deep embodied experience. Not one or the other. Both — held together.

    Neurophysiology of Trauma

Drawing on the foundational research of Ruth Lanius and Frank Corrigan, we explore how trauma is encoded not in memory alone, but in the body's nervous system — in subcortical loops, interoceptive signals, and the dorsal/ventral vagal dance. Understanding this is not academic. It is liberation.

    DBR & Deep Brain Reorienting

Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) targets the earliest subcortical responses to shock and relational trauma. As a Level 2 practitioner working toward DB-P certification, this newsletter brings the leading edge of that framework — orienting, startle, and the profound stilling that precedes true integration.

    Nonviolent SAFE PTI & EMDR

The nonviolent, SAFE PTI approach to EMDR honours the wisdom of the nervous system rather than overriding it. We explore bilateral stimulation, resource installation, and the relational field as co-regulating forces — titrated, trauma-informed, and grounded in present-moment safety.

    Finding Solid Ground

Before ascent, there must be ground. Pendulation between activation and settling, between contraction and expansion. Titration of present-moment experience. Compassionate pacing. This is the container that makes transformation possible rather than retraumatising.

    Bottom-Up Interventions

    Acoustic & Somatic Pathways

True healing requires more than just talking. We utilize evidence-based, neurophysiologically informed modalities to directly access and retune the nervous system, creating a biological foundation for deep psychological work.

    Polyvagal Theory

Understanding the autonomic nervous system as the foundation for safety, connection, and defense. We map your unique nervous system states to build capacity for regulation and social engagement.

    Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)

An evidence-based acoustic therapy designed to retune the nervous system. By exercising the middle ear muscles, SSP helps shift the autonomic nervous system out of chronic defense and into a state of safety.

    Integrated Listening Systems (iLs)

A multi-sensory program combining auditory, balance, and visual activities to improve brain function, sensory processing, and emotional regulation from the bottom up.

    RRP (Resilience Regulation Protocol)

A structured approach to building somatic resilience, expanding your window of tolerance, and developing practical tools for real-time nervous system regulation.

    Sound · Rhythm · Safety

    The nervous system
    hears before it thinks.

SSP, RRP, and iLS work at the level of the brainstem and autonomic nervous system — beneath language, beneath memory, beneath the stories we tell about what happened. Polyvagal theory is the map. These modalities are the path.

    SSP

    Safe & Sound Protocol

The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP), developed by Stephen Porges, uses specially filtered music to retune the neural pathways of the middle ear — signalling safety to the nervous system at a subcortical level. By training the auditory system to detect the prosodic frequencies of human connection, SSP creates a physiological foundation for felt safety that talk-based approaches alone cannot reach. The effects ripple outward: reduced hypervigilance, improved social engagement, and a nervous system that is finally willing to rest.

    RRP

    Rhythmic Regulation Protocol

The Rhythmic Regulation Protocol (RRP) harnesses the body's innate need for rhythm as a regulatory force. Drawing on polyvagal theory and the neuroscience of interoception, RRP uses patterned, repetitive sensory input to organise the nervous system from the bottom up. Where trauma fragments and dysregulates, rhythm restores coherence — a return to the biological pulse beneath the chaos. It is one of the most gentle and powerful entry points into subcortical healing.

    iLS

    Integrated Listening Systems

Integrated Listening Systems (iLS) combine bone conduction sound, movement, and balance activities to simultaneously stimulate auditory, vestibular, and proprioceptive pathways. This multi-sensory approach engages the brainstem, cerebellum, and prefrontal cortex in an integrated way — building the neurological scaffolding for regulation, attention, and relational presence. For those whose trauma lives in the pre-verbal and pre-memory body, iLS offers a portal into healing that bypasses the need for narrative entirely.

    PVT

    Polyvagal-Informed Practice

Polyvagal Theory (Porges, 2011) fundamentally reframes our understanding of the autonomic nervous system. Rather than a simple fight-or-flight binary, we now understand a three-part hierarchy: the ventral vagal circuit of social engagement and safety, the sympathetic mobilisation of threat response, and the dorsal vagal collapse of shutdown and dissociation. Polyvagal-informed practice means meeting each state with precision — co-regulating the nervous system rather than expecting cognition to override biology. It changes everything about how we hold a healing space.

"Safety is not the absence of threat. It is the presence of connection."
    — Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory

In Anchored Ascent, these protocols are not used in isolation. They are woven into a coherent, sequenced approach — building the ventral vagal foundation from which all other healing becomes possible. SSP and RRP often precede or accompany DBR, EMDR, and somatic work, creating the physiological readiness that allows the deeper layers of trauma to finally release.

    The Approach

    The path to YOU. Authentically.

These are not techniques to be applied. They are ways of being — with yourself, with your experience, with the unfolding process of becoming whole.

    01

    Solid Ground First

We do not rush toward the wound. We build the container — internal resources, relational safety, somatic anchors — until the ground beneath you is genuinely solid. Only then do we move.

    02

    Titration & Pendulation

Healing is not a plunge. It is a careful, compassionate oscillation between activation and settling — expanding the window of tolerance breath by breath, moment by moment, until expansion becomes your new baseline.

    03

    Present Moment as Medicine

The past lives in the body through sensation. Returning to the present — through interoceptive awareness, orienting, and gentle inquiry — is itself a radical act of healing that the nervous system responds to immediately.

    04

Do the Hard Things, With Compassion

Avoiding difficulty keeps us small. Anchored Ascent does not promise comfort — it promises accompaniment. Doing the hard things, at the right pace, in the right relational field, with fierce self-compassion as the constant.

    05

    Embodiment as Expansion

Authentic aliveness is not found outside the body. By becoming deeply, honestly, courageously embodied — by reclaiming sensation, felt-sense, and inner knowing — you discover the energy and wholeness to rise.

    Nonviolent SAFE PTI EMDR

The work lives where science meets felt sense.

Anchored Ascent was born from a conviction: that trauma's complexity deserves both rigorous scientific understanding and warm, embodied accompaniment. As a Level 2 DBR practitioner working toward DB-P certification, and trained in nonviolent SAFE PTI EMDR principles, I write from the inside — as a clinician who sits with this work daily, and as a human being who has walked it personally.

The framework of finding solid ground — of pendulation, titration, and the courageous willingness to do the hard things with self-compassion — is not theoretical here. It is lived. And it is the foundation from which authentic expansion, authentic ascent, becomes not just possible, but inevitable.
